gear oil

I am thinking of changing the manual gear box oil on my 97 328i coupe cars nearly done a hundred thousand mile now so think its about time the gear box had a birthday, seen an orange label on the box that says ATF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID !!!!!!.........On a Manual gear box???? does anyone know if this is right or should i go to main dealers with the redg number etc and ask them. Dont like the Idea of auto fluid in a manual box seems to go against common sense
