1.6i engine problems (stickling sound)

Postby Arrakis on Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:18 am

Hi guys,

I am totaly new here to your forum and i am not English. So i do beleave you will find out what i am trying to tell you.

The problem is, my e36's engline makes strange sounds when it is cold. It seems it tickles like clock or something. When i push exelerator the tickling goes fastera and so on. After engline gets warm to working condition - it calms down and so sound is heard.

Could someone please tell me what could it be? And how can i fix this problem?

All help is apriciated.

Cheers BMW e36 Lovers!

That would be your tappets.
I have a Mitsubishi Legnum vr4 with a highly strung 350bhp 2.5litre twin turbo engine, it does exactly as you say your 316 does, the reason it does it is because of the oil i use. Its a severe gear oil designed for very tempermental engines. The 1st thing id suggest you do is check the oil level, if that is okay then id suggest an engine flush with something like ''novastop'' engine flush, then empty engine of oil and let a litre of fresh oil drain through the engine to help get rid of deposits. Then fill up the engine with a decent oil with the proper viscousity for your engine. If this hasnt helped then you may have to replace the tappets :x

Thank you very much mate. I beleave i should wash my engine as you say and then change oil to decent. Lets hope that will help. How long can i drive car with such a problem? And what consequences can appear if problem will not be solved?

Thx in advance.

Noooo FLUSH not WASH, DO NOT run water through the oil filler cap!!!!
In regards to the noisey tappets, nothing will really happen except maybe you kicking or punching someone or something after the sound drives you mad. Personally i wouldnt be able to live with it but i have no choice in my Legnum. If you do plan to not try and fix the noise then id suggest you upload a video to youtube and paste a link here so we can make sure it is the Tappets!!
