Tranny stuck in 2nd - help plz!

Postby csuhockey on Fri Mar 27, 2009 8:15 pm

So we had a huge blizzard yesterday and today I was driving and everything was fine until I went off a small edge of packed snow (~3-4 inches) ...

As I continued driving I tried to shift out of second and the gear was locked in...I was still able to continue with throttle but obviously the car died once I stopped and let out the clutch. I held in the clutch and had a buddy push me, but was going nowhere so finally put some force into the shifter until it popped into neutral.

So now I can technically drive in my other gears (only did so for a few hundred feet) but could not shift easily into second and did not want to force it and have it get stuck again and the same situation happen.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be/possible fixes? What might be the repercussions of driving using the other gears while this situation is in effect?

I really don't wanna ruin my transmission by driving on it if it could be a simple fix, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

The bad news is, it doesn't sound like a simple fix. It sounds like you bent a shift fork inside the trans, when you forced it. Also, when you went off the snow, you may have bent the shift linkage outside the trans, have it TOWED to a dealer or trustworthy BMW indy mechanic who might be able to spot anything bent. The less you drive it now the better.
