Hi all, recently bought bmw 318is 96 reg,on a way home heard a strange kind of humming sound from the rear, faster i go more constant it becomes,at slow speed 10-20mph everything seems ok,any ideas what it can be?thanks
I agree, it's most likely to be a wheel bearing. I suggest u replace it soon to avoid major trouble if it fails completely while driving. You can find a DIY on YouTube. Fairly straightforward task but might be a bit tough to remove because the bearing has been there a long time.
After removing the wheel and the brakes, I've seen it done with a hammer and a metal stick. You don't have to remove the whole axle. But I reccomend checking out a YouTube video of a DIY on how to change a wheel bearing of an E36..
