Today, I have this question for you guys . . . What is the top speed that you have ever achieved out of your BMW E36? For me, I recall that I was on a high way once and I achieved (205km/h) and that wasn’t the best I could do. I had to slow down because of some cars that were going slowly ahead of me and when I tried to do it once more it was too late and I couldn’t get a proper place to try again. So my car’s top speed that I already have made was 205km/h. In the following video, there’s a BMW E36 318is car that achieves a 212km/h top speed (assuming the speed on the screen is accurate) although I believe it may even go further.

So, what about you? Please post your top speed and your car’s engine specs in the comments below.

IMPORTANT: If you didn’t try this before and you suddenly feel that you need to try it, please please be careful and make sure to try this in a proper place. When the car is moving at a speed like 200km+, it gets dangerous and may cause a very serious accident. Be careful!!

Enjoy this…

    Well, in my first M3, which had numerous modifications, I once pegged the speedo at 165 mph(or 265.5 kph to everyone else). Never did it again, though. Stick to 140 mph or under. That 25 more miles an hour makes a HUGE difference.

    I do not recommend even TRYING speeds like that in a stock non-M E36. If you do, make sure your tires, suspension, and alignment is PERFECT. The slightest movement in the steering wheel make you FLY in that direction faster than you ever thought possible.

    Unbelievable adrenaline rush, though!

    95 318is… m42 engine.. no mods.. top speed attained 205 as well.. maybe could have gone more.. but i guess we do not have straight roads in fiji to try that….

    To help the conversion challenged:
    100mph = 160kph
    110mph = 177kph
    120mph = 193kph
    130mph = 209kph
    140mph = 225kph
    150mph = 241kph
    160mph = 257kph
    170mph = 273kph

    I hit redline in 5th gear in my ’99 E36 M3. The speedo reported 142mph. And yes, I second Seth’s recommendation to NEVER attempt a max speed run in a stock E36.

    I get adrenaline at 120 MPH I have been at this speed and it feels awesome. My car seems that it wants to go faster it feels like it will take off. I was once on freeway 15 on San Diego Calif. Where there is a area that goes down and you can get the speed really easy. I am afraid of going faster I don’t have new suspension or new shocks. And could loose control but the car hold at this speed good. I also need to aligment I once hit a curve and unaligned it.

    I have a 93 325is w/ turner motorsport chip an M3 exhaust and some decent street tires. Fastest I’ve pushed it to was around 145mph and what a time! At that speed though I felt like I needed more downforce and upgraded suspension before I could go any faster. Backend got reeeaally light.

    Only just got my 1996 328i touring (manual), not had it over 135mph yet (216kmph) but it was still pulling strong, but traffic forced me to ease up.

    I am not sure if you guys are quoting true speed or what is indicated on the clock (speedometer). I have a ’93 German spec 325i Coupe (141kW) and backed down at 250km/h on the clock. It felt as if I could go faster. Assuming a 4% error on the clock (help me if I am wrong?) I was probably doing 240. I did this in 2001 and must add that I will never try this stupid stint again.

  12. 12 On June 18th, 2008, Paulicious said:

    Are you guys scare of going fast again everyone says they would never try it again. Do you guys feel that you car will loose control because is old or not the same as before? After all BMW are the Perfect Driving Machine. Why is that?

  13. 13 On June 18th, 2008, Tony Sticks said:

    @Woolfman: For me, I was depending on the Speedometer and yes, I know it’s inaccurate specially after changing wheels size and tires with 17″. But 250km/h seems like too much to me. I don’t know…

  14. 14 On June 18th, 2008, Seb said:

    Paulicious: it sounds like a lot of the people here never normally drive “spiritedly” so when they do try a v-max they get scared. Driving quickly is obviously dangerous, but FWIW my 328 felt perfectly planted at 135mph and had no issues braking hard down from that speed.

    I was using the speedometer, and I am on 17s so my top speed was probably off by a bit.

    And I would love to push it that fast again, however I am not as careless as I once was. I really want to take my baby out on a track, that’s where this type of fun should take place. Plus I live in VT now and trying to go that fast on the road they got up here is just suicide!

    Was I scared? Nah, the adrenaline was too high to be scared. I was in tha zone! 😀

    Hey pMulc07, come on down to CT! We got lots of smooth roads!

    BTW, you go to the Bavarian Autosport car show in NH?
    Also, for those not blessed/cursed to be american, VT is the state Vermont, and CT is Connecticut.

    Oh Yeah, I like smooth roads. They let you really push the limits. You prolly got the closest track to me too.

    And nah, I missed the show… when was it? I just recently learned that NH is where they are base. That was prolly a good time.

    the most I’ve ever gotten to was 240+ km/h and that took a lot of time 😛

    Angelo-

    I think what you are trying to say is that the engine cuts out at that speed? If it is, it prolly is the rev limiter. A chip would do the trick, and they are really easy to swap. Took me 15 minutes at most using the directions it came with. http://www.turnermotorsport.com – thats where I got mine, I recommend pickin’ one up.

  21. 21 On July 2nd, 2008, Angelo said:

    thanks pMulc07, yeah is a limiter, but now the thing is what kind of chip is recommended i dont know to much abbout it, but pretty sure that there are plenty of them, and how possible is to mess the car with the wrong one, thanks

    Indicated 150mph/240kph in my e36 328i. New suspension and other bits done before that. Car felt very planted at that speed and was somewhere between 5500 and 6000rpm. Doesn’t take long to get to 140mph, its the extra 10mph to 150 that takes the extra 1 – 2 miles.
